Have you ever sat down to complete your work online only to find that you have somehow wandered over to YouTube and started watching reviews of the latest movies? Yeah, me too.

Let’s face it, the Internet can be a very distracting place. Whether you’re doing an online internship or simply trying to complete your college work outside the classroom. Therefore, all the hard work can fly out the window as soon as a viral video pops up on your social media feed.

Although there is no doubt that the Internet is an invaluable resource possessing more knowledge and information than any other thing to ever exist, it can be a major distraction and barrier in your work-from-home internship.

According to the report, nearly 50% of college students surveyed reported that the use of technology for non-class purposes was distracting to them.

So, you may be asking yourself, what are some ways to avoid distractions when doing an unpaid or paid internship? Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to do. It just takes some determination, self-restraint, and planning.

Let check out the five tips to you help you stay focused and avoid distractions when doing remote internships:

1. Get into a working routine.

Developing a daily routine to complete your tasks in an online internship program is a great way to avoid distractions. By establishing and sticking to the schedule, you can ensure that you are focused on your work, resulting in better productivity!

Start by constructing a working plan. Evaluate periods of the day when you are most productive. For instance, if you’re a morning person, maybe the quiet hours of 7 – 9 a.m. will be most suitable for you. Or, if your family is out and about in the afternoons, utilize that time to hunker down and work.

2. Silence all nonessential notifications.

Nothing is worse than having constant pings, buzzes, whistles, and bells break your concentration. And if you’re someone who can’t save yourself from checking your phone or social media every time a notification comes through. Then you probably know the frustration of spending two hours on work only to discover that you’ve made very little progress.

To free yourself of these distractions, make sure to temporarily silence all nonessential notifications when you are doing an online internship program. In simple terms, it includes applications on your phone, tablet, computer, and any other personal electronics.

When it comes to your laptop or computer, make sure you activate all nonessential applications to prevent notifications from popping up on your screen including any social media, video chat, or gaming apps.

In addition, unless you plan to become productive on that day, keeping only required websites open will be a good tactic to deter getting distracted online.

As for your mobile devices, put the ringer on silent and log in to slack, whats app, skype, or more to stay connected with your teammates. Moreover, you can even keep your mobile device in a different room or somewhere not within immediate reach to stop the temptation of constantly checking.

3. Block access to distracting websites.

Do you ever find yourself mindlessly typing in the URL to a social media website only to get there and realize you don’t know why you wanted to go there in the first place? Again, we are on the same page.

Sometimes you may have to give a presentation during your online internship program. Therefore, to focus on your meeting avoid extra distractions.

4. Take a screen break.

Factoring periodic screen breaks into your work-from-home internship schedule is a great way to bypass burnout and boost your productivity. Therefore, try to schedule five to fifteen minutes every hour or so to get up and disconnect from the laptop or computer screen. Employ this time to refill your water bottle, grab a snack, step outside, and take a walk.

However, if you plan to return to work, make sure you do not take long breaks. Try setting a timer so your routine is not compromised and it is on track. In simple words, try to avoid checking any nonessential notifications, going on social media, watching online videos, or doing anything else online that can distract you.

5. Get some rest.

Trying to be productive online when you’re exhausted can be incredibly difficult. Make sure that you’re getting plenty of rest. Since the 9 to 5 online internship is at home. So take care of yourself

First look at your sleep schedule for opportunities for improvement. If you’re not getting the standard eight hours, try to go to bed earlier, reorganize your daily schedule, and eliminate any late-night distractions that could be keeping you up.

Overall, staying focused and increasing your productivity online is easy and doable when working for an unpaid or paid internship. With a little determination and self-restraint, you’ll be getting the most out of your work. Ulead is here looking for spirited individuals who are looking to challenge the way the system works.
